Abstract

Le projet Caruso a commencé en 1994 comme une nouvelle proposition, mais fondée sur un ancien accord de coopération entre l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) et l’Université fédérale de Pará (UFPA) à Belem, au Brésil. Les objectifs du projet consistaient à déterminer les sources, les voies de transmission et les effets du mercure sur les collectivités de la région du Bas-Tapajós. La zone en amont de la rivière a subi les contrecoups de l’exploitation aurifère artisanale (Akagi et al. 1995; Malm et Guimarães 1999). Le projet Caruso s’appuyait sur l’hypothèse initiale selon laquelle la région en aval souffrirait aussi de l’exposition au mercure et des effets de la même exploitation aurifère au sud de São Luis do Tapajós (figure 10.1).
