Abstract
Numerous diseases can have symptoms similar as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Intestinal infection has to be ruled out especially in case of acute onset. Pathogens as Salmonella, Shigella, Cytomegalovirus, or Entamoeba histolytica can cause colitis resembling to ulcerative colitis (UC); infection with Campylobacter jejuni, Yersinia, or Mycobacterium tuberculosis can mimic Crohn’s disease (CD). Cow milk protein allergy can also lead to UC-like colitis, and celiac disease may be discussed in case of chronic diarrhea and failure to thrive. Other diagnosis, such as immunodeficiency diseases, lymphoma, eosinophilic gastroenteropathy, autoimmune enteropathy, or vasculitis can sometimes mimic IBD.
