Robotic Surgery of the Bladder

Abstract

Robotic-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) for the treatment of bladder cancer is increasingly being employed. When only direct costs are considered, open radical cystectomy as compared to RARC is a less costly therapy. However, when indirect costs are also considered, cost-margins narrow, as RARC may result in less complication-related expenditures. Future prospective comparisons of the two modalities should include costing data to optimally compare cost effectiveness of the open and robotic approach to bladder surgery.
