Abstract

As is well known, the former USSR kept the military parity with the developed counties, but was incapable to manufacture some chemical equipment, e.g., high-pressure compressors for hydrogen recirculation. Such compressors were employed, for instance, in the production of propellants, jet fuel additives, fiber monomers, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other intermediate and end chemicals for civil and military use. The cores of these manufacturing processes were the conventional three-phase fixed-bed reactors operated under high pressure. Because of the embargo imposed on the import of hydrogen recirculation compressors into the Soviet Union, the operation and maintenance of many industrial plants as well as the construction of new ones were problematic if possible at all.
