Abstract
The use of synthetic mesh to repair abdominal wall defects has drastically lowered the recurrence rates. The main material, polypropylene, has been the industry standard for over 40 years. Other materials such as PET and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are also commonly used as hernia mesh. Newer products include synthetic resorbable mesh and coated mesh. With over 80 different types of mesh available, choosing the optimal mesh for a particular procedure can be overwhelming. This chapter addresses the state of the current synthetic mesh used in ventral hernia repair, including the challenging task of choosing the “best” mesh.
