Abstract

Several months after initiating the development of the twin Mars Exploration Rovers, NASA drew up its future Mars Exploration program architecture. The 2001 orbiter and the 2003 rovers were to be followed by the launch of Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) in 2005. This would image the surface at a resolution of several tens of centimeters and recover some of the science of the lost Mars Climate Orbiter. After that, the agency planned to launch the first of the low-cost Mars Scout missions and a long-range roving science laboratory in 2007. The program envisaged the first sample-return mission in 2011 and the second in 2013.
