Nonhematopoietic Lesions Including Vascular

Abstract

Nonhematopoietic lesions of the spleen can be quite challenging. In this chapter, cysts of the spleen are illustrated. These include cysts of both infectious and noninfectious etiologies. Hamartoma, a benign lesion characterized by proliferation of benign splenic red pulp components, is illustrated, as well as myoid angioendothelioma, a purported variant of splenic hamartoma. Also, the difficult area of inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) and related entities is discussed. The specific diagnosis includes “true” IPT, IPT-like follicular dendritic cell tumor, and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Vascular tumors of the spleen have a broad range of histologic appearance and clinical behavior. A wide range is illustrated including SANT, littoral cell angioma, and angiosarcoma. Finally, a broad array of tumors metastatic to the spleen is illustrated.
