Anion Translocation Systems of the Inner Mitochondrial Membrane

  • Chapter
Membrane-Bound Enzymes

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 14))

Abstract

The inner mitochondrial membrane is not freely permeable to various anionic substrates. From time to time it has been proposed that the translocation of anionic substrates across the inner mitochondrial membrane is mediated by specific systems (1–3) through exchange-diffusion reactions of the respective anions with hydroxyl (2,4,5) or, what amounts to the same, through proton-anion symports (6,7). The occurrence of anion-anion exchange-diffusion reactions has also been postulated (2,3).
