Insulin Secretion “In Vitro”: Comparative Aspects and Comparisons with Studies on Release of Insulin “In Vivo”

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 2))

Abstract

In the preceding papers many studies were reported regarding the release of insulin “in vivo” in animals and men, mainly under the aspects of gastrointestinal control of insulin secretion. I will take a slightly different position. I shall describe experiments performed in collaboration with Drs. Telib, Ammon, Hildebrandt, Raptis, Schröder, Veboah, Schwarz and Melani, in which

  1. 1)

insulin secretion “in vitro” was studied in the presence of different sugars and amino acids, polypeptide hormones of gastrointestinal origin and sulfonylureas of different β-cytotropic activities,

  2. 2)

the response of the pancreatic tissue of various species of animals including amphibians was examined

  3. 3)

the relation between the extractable pancreatic insulin content and the amount of insulin released following stimulation was investigated as well as the conceivable incorporation of glucose and amino acids into the insulin molecule.
