Abstract
The medical pathology laboratory forms the focus of this chapter. In particular, the current state of low IT in laboratories is highlighted and the need for superior IT solutions is emphasised. It is also noted that financial considerations must be taken into account when designing and developing appropriate IT solutions for the laboratory.

Healthsmart is the Victorian government’s whole-of-health information and communications strategy for the public health sector. Healthsmart aims to improve patient care and reduce the administrative burden and associated costs by adopting a more standardised approach to information systems.

Middleware is an intermediate software between a more technically advanced analyser and the current “old” generation of laboratory information systems that enables the analyser and the laboratory information system to integrate (Friedman 2005).
