Abstract

While many ambitious goals had been set for Project Mercury, from its inception there was always one objective above all others; to place Americans into space — and hopefully into orbit — and return them safely to Earth. Much as the orbital mission of Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961 would frustrate NASA, it also provided welcome reassurance that man could survive being launched into space.
