Abstract

The University of Minnesota—Twin Cities campus spans two locations, one in Minneapolis and the other in St. Paul. This arrangement set the stage for a unique separation of the Department of Statistics. Ten years after its founding in 1958, the department split into two, with Minneapolis becoming home to theoretical statistics and St. Paul housing applied statistics. Both areas flourished for 20 years and made important contributions to the fields of teaching, consulting, and research, most notably in computing, Bayesian analysis, and regression theory. The faculty came together under one roof in 1999 as the current School of Statistics, which now resides in Ford Hall in the Minneapolis.
