Abstract

The United States of America covers an area of 9.6 million km2, comprising the southern half of the North American Continent, being bordered to the north by Canada and to the south by Mexico. It also owns Alaska and Hawaii, as well as a number of islands in the Pacific and Caribbean, which are not included in this assessment. The central plains are flanked to the west by the Rocky Mountains, rising to 4,300 m, and to the east by the older Appalachian Range, rising to 2,000 m. The Mississippi River flows southwards to the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans, and a number of large lakes on the Canadian border drain into the Atlantic through the Hudson River.
