Abstract

Bolivia is a landlocked country of 1 million km2 in the heartland of South America, being bordered by Brasil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru. The capital, La Paz, lies at an altitude of about 3,500 m on the Altiplano, which is a barren intermontane valley, flanked by snow-capped Andean peaks, rising to over 6,500 m. It is dominated by Lake Titicaca, an unusual high altitude lake, covering some 8,500 km2, on which ply steamers of almost ocean-going size. To the east of the Andes lies the Oriente, an extensive and remote area of foothills, plains and tropical forests, occupying about two-thirds of the country.
