Abstract
Mathematical literacy is regarded as a primary educational objective in mathematics teaching at school, and big ideas of mathematics are supposed to guide teaching (OECD, Measuring student knowledge and skills. A new framework for assessment, p. 7, 1999). However, neither curricula nor textbooks provide satisfactory information on how to fulfill such demands in everyday teaching. Instead of inducing a revolution in mathematics teaching, this paper suggests small steps to promote mathematical literacy related to compulsory topics in mathematics classes (in secondary schools), which are also appropriate for students of lower performance levels and also for teachers who are not as proficient we would like ourselves to be. In this respect, the title of this paper might also be “Transforming ideal concepts of mathematical literacy into small, but applicable elements of everyday mathematics teaching.”
