Production of Vegetable Oils from Fruits and Germs

In Europe, olive oil may well be the oldest type of vegetable oil used by humans. Harvesting olives is labor-intensive and the oil is expensive. Palm fruit, on the other hand, grows in bunches that are much cheaper to harvest. Its annual production per acre is also much higher. Accordingly, more palm oil is now produced than soybean oil, but its production process has remained largely underdeveloped until now. Recently, more and more patents are published that originate from palm oil–growing countries, indicating strong development activity, as demonstrated in this chapter. With the growing production of corn to meet bioethanol demand, more corn germs become available, and their processing has also attracted development attention.
