Abstract

Central to any musculoskeletal ultrasound practice is the ultrasound machine used to perform the examinations. Optimal use of the machine requires a reasonable understanding of the machine’s capabilities. Gaining skill in using the various “knobs” on the ultrasound machine can create improved picture quality, improved ability to evaluate for subtle tissue changes, and, overall, can provide a better product in both diagnostics and therapeutics.

This chapter will review the common features available with most ultrasound machines and some of the principles behind using them. It will also include some hints on scanning and obtaining high-quality ultrasound images.
