Family Therapy in Public Sector Settings

Abstract

Family interventions improve outcome for patients with psychiatric illnesses (Heru 2006). This chapter identifies key aspects of evidence-based family interventions and shows, through case examples, how to implement family-based treatment in public sector settings. Family interventions develop family resilience, promote individual recovery, and prevent the development of illness. Resilient families have better outcomes for medical illness (Weihs et al. 2002) and psychiatric illness (Tienari et al. 2004; Miller et al. 2008; Keitner et al. 1995; Roberts et al. 2009).
