Abstract
Acceleration (G) is one of the most demanding aspects of flying a highperformance fighter jet. As many as one in 10 pilots reports episodes of gravityinduced loss of consciousness (G-LOC - pronounced “gee-lock”) while flying aerobatic maneuvers, although the real incidence is probably higher because GLOC often causes amnesia. The unconsciousness that occurs during G-LOC is similar to fainting but, for the pilot, the consequences can be lethal; the US Air Force (USAF) reported G-LOC as the cause of 18 fatal accidents between 1982 and 1990.
