The SAGES Manual

Abstract

This chapter focuses on four categories of diseases that may be treated with therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): (1) common bile duct stones, (2) malignancy of pancreatic or biliary origin, (3) pancreatitis, and (4) abdominal pain of possible pancreaticobiliary origin. It also details methods of endoscopic sphincterotomy, defines determinants of complications from ERCP, and describes the use of ERCP to manage postoperative biliary leaks, traumatic injury to the pancreas, and benign bile duct strictures. The chapter is intended to provide a solid foundation in the understanding of therapeutic ERCP for the novice surgical endoscopist.
