Abstract
Mitotic rate (histologically defined as mitoses/mm2, not mitoses/10 HPF) is an important primary tumor prognostic factor. A mitotic rate equal to or greater than 1/mm2 denotes a melanoma at higher risk for metastasis. It should now be used as one defining criteria of T1b melanomas
