Abstract
While ultrasound-based surgical energy systems are increasingly employed as a means to dissect, cut, and coagulate tissues with efficacy supported by a growing body of multidisciplinary research, the ultimate value of these systems is dependent upon surgeons learning to use them safely and effectively. This chapter allows the learner to appreciate basic principles of ultrasonic energy systems, potential complications associated with their use, and methods to prevent or reduce the incidence of injury. These concepts could collectively be called the fundamentals for the use of safe ultrasonic energy. There are several ultrasonic energy devices currently available; however, this chapter will concentrate specifically on the safe use of the ultrasonic shears.
