Abstract

Working in the area of Arabic automatic speech recognition (ASR) requires a good knowledge about the characteristics of the Arabic language and the principals of ASR systems. In this chapter, the fundamentals of ASR are introduced. Furthermore, we highlight the characteristics of the Arabic language with relevance to ASR. This includes, phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical properties of Arabic that have to be carefully taken into consideration.
