Abstract
Objectives: This study’s purpose is to examine the prevalence of chronic conditions among older Mexicans with diabetes and to determine the incidence of newly diagnosed medical conditions at follow-up by diabetes status.
Methods: This study uses the Mexican Health and Aging Survey (MHAS). Chi-square tests were conducted to test bivariate relationships of self-reported diabetes with demographic covariates and select self-reported health outcomes. Logistic regression models then were conducted to evaluate the relationship between diabetes and the prevalence and incidence on health outcomes adjusting for sociodemographic covariates.
Results: Analysis indicates that approximately 15% of this sample reported having been diagnosed with diabetes. Subjects with diabetes had an odds of 8.25 (95% CI = 3.86, 18.0) greater to rate their health as “poor,” 3.52 (95% CI = 2.15, 5.75) greater odds to miss more than 1 month of work in the previous year, and 2.26 (95%, CI = 1.33, 3.82) greater odds to have had a stroke in their lifetime. Finally, subjects with diabetes had a much higher likelihood of mortality by follow-up (O.R. = 3.36, 95% CI = 2.09, 5.39) and significantly higher odds of having any functional limitations (O.R. = 3.24, 95% CI = 2.01, 5.25).
Discussion: Older Mexicans with diabetes had a greater disease burden than their counterparts.
