Training and Career Development Grants

Abstract

For those applying for training or career development grants, the natural inclination is to focus on the scientific portions of the proposal. After all, the research project is the path to discover the unknown, and that is the motivation for doing research and pursuing a research career. However, one must keep in mind that the purpose of such grants is supporting the candidate’s learning to do research rather than the actual research results. Indeed, if NIH wanted the most scientific knowledge for its grant money, then it would make more sense to award all grants to senior investigators who have a proven track record of productivity.
