Abstract
Subtotal colectomy involves resection of the entire intra-abdominal colon. When done as an elective procedure, anastomosis of the terminal ileum to the distal colorectum is performed, and many of these cases are performed laparoscopically rather than by the open technique described here. The open technique is still required in emergency situations, and in those cases ileostomy and mucous fistula or Hartmann’s pouch may be preferred. This chapter describes the open technique for resection and anastomosis.
