Abstract
There are risks to the fetus and infant from untreated maternal psychiatric disorders as well as from the psychotropic medications. Prenatal antidepressant medication is associated with preterm birth, possible increase in cardiac malformations, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, and postnatal adaptation symptoms. Prenatal exposure to valproate is associated with congenital malformations and neurocognitive delay and deficits. Pregnant women taking psychotropic medications need enhanced monitoring during pregnancy.
