Abstract
We have recognized that epidemiology is a subfield of Public Health; the basic theme is always the community. It is, however, not only a subfield; it is more: In the present section, we shall sketch the role of epidemiology in shaping the structure of the health system. In the following sections, we will describe how epidemiology determines the main activities of the health system, namely curing diseases, preventing diseases, finding cases of diseases early by screening, and defining health strategies. Details will be treated and many examples be given in all later lessons.
