Abstract
Today’s medical student is no longer dispatched to the patient’s bedside to perform the time-consuming Lee–White clotting time test and community-based physicians are unlikely to be found peering through microscopes at stained blood smears. Nevertheless, findings related to circulating blood cells and the hematopoietic and lymphatic systems can have profound diagnostic and prognostic implications. Just some examples would be the unexpected finding of anemia in a long-distance runner or the detection of leukopenia in a person taking a psychotropic drug, as discussed below.
