Abstract
An enterostomy, or stoma, may be constructed from either the ileum (ileostomy) or the colon (colostomy). Fashioning a stoma involves bringing the intestine through the anterior abdominal wall. This allows intestinal contents to drain through the stoma and into an appliance. A variety of appliances are now available to suit the particular needs of each patient and their specific stoma. The two broad categories of stoma construction are “end” stomas and “loop” or “diverting” stomas. Stomas may also be temporary or permanent, depending on the indication for stoma construction and medical status of the patient.
