Abstract

Automated communication on the Web requires not only standardized ways to represent data assets, but also standardized ways to exchange information between software applications that use their own internal structures to represent information. In this chapter we concentrate on the adoption of XML to support data exchange in business. We describe the shift from the traditional EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) document standards to XML-based standards and frameworks, and furthermore, to the standards for Web services. At the end of the chapter we introduce XML-based solutions for supporting security in data interchange.
