Abstract
We introduce Air Cushion vehicles with the early work of Sir Christopher Cockerell in the UK. There were many others experimenting with air cushion lift at the same time in countries as far apart as the USA, China, while it was his work that sparked off developments of the concept that advanced quickly, particularly flexible skirt technology. Since that time, we have seen some very large craft, and more recently a widening application of medium sized utility craft alongside the amphibious landing craft of the US Navy, currently being studied for replacement with the “transformable” craft.
