Abstract
The fundamental goal of gait analysis is to assess an individual’s functional capabilities and identify the presence and impact of impairments on joint function. A comprehensive evaluation of the hip joint during gait should include measures of joint motion, joint forces, and neuromuscular function. Comprehensive biomechanical and neuromuscular examinations of gait in patients with intra-articular hip pathology are lacking and are limited to a handful of analyses in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Alterations in hip joint kinematics and kinetics exist in patients with FAI both prior to and following arthroscopic intervention; however, no data exist on potential neuromuscular alterations for these patients. More comprehensive analyses of the interplay between joint motion, joint forces, and neuromuscular function at the hip joint during gait are required to fully understand impairments associated with hip pathology. Data obtained from these analyses can be used to develop targeted treatment strategies and guide appropriate rehabilitation programs to address persistent impairments. Advancing our knowledge of biomechanical and neuromuscular function of the hip joint will lead to continued improvements in both the diagnosis and treatment of pathological conditions of the joint.
