Cardiac Prosthetic Valves
(A) Mechanical bileaflet prosthetic valve is comprised of two symmetrical leaflets suspended on two hinges that allow pivot motion. (B) Pressure opens the leaflets to 80° with antegrade flow through three orifices and backpressure closes the leaflets. Shown in the mitral position using TEE in (C) 2D and (D) 3D Live. (E) Washing (regurgitant) jets at the four hinge points prevent blood stasis shown using 3D color Doppler. This type of prosthetic valve is typically inserted in the anti-anatomical (perpendicular to native MV commissures) to facilitate opening and minimize submitral chordal entrapment. Patient with MVR St. Jude shown using 3D Zoom during (F) diastole and (G) systole from the LA in the surgeon’s orientation.
