Abstract

This is admittedly a personal and idiosyncratic journey through the history of discoveries and events, facts and ideas, possibilities, wild speculations and pure inventions relating to our understanding of planets, exoplanets, life and alien life. Nonetheless it should enable the reader to appreciate that the origins of the very recent, modern and rapidly developing study of planets beyond the solar system actually has its roots extending back centuries if not millennia.
