Abstract

Our night-time window is slowly turning away from the north galactic pole towards our own galaxy. Figure 5.1 illustrates the galactic plane, with the Sun well below it during spring. Late night observers can already witness the rising of the summer constellations and the Milky Way with them, in the east. This month we’ll take the opportunity to pay a last visit to intergalactic space, before the vast molecular dust clouds of our home galaxy move into view again. For a better understanding of the positions of the described galaxies, Fig. 5.2 illustrates the immediate neighborhood of the Milky Way.
