Abstract

Infections of the central nervous system require rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent significant morbidity and mortality. These infections may be of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic etiology. Many of these infections can be diagnosed by examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This chapter focuses on the cytomorphology, differential diagnosis, and ancillary investigations of CSF and brain infections.
