Abstract

A variety of infections can involve the lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow. Fine needle aspiration is a rapid, minimally invasive, and cost-effective means to diagnose hematologic infections and acquire material for ancillary studies to guide therapy. Viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections involving hematopoietic tissue produce characteristic cytomorphologic findings. This chapter highlights key hematologic infections and focuses on their cytomorphology, differential diagnosis, and ancillary studies.
