Abstract
An analytical technique based on the Mueller matrix method and the Stokes parameters is proposed for extracting six effective parameters on the principal axis angle, phase retardance, diattenuation axis angle, diattenuation, optical rotation angle and circular diattenuation value of anisotropic optical materials. In this study, the proposed methodology does not require the principal birefringence axes and diattenuation axes to be aligned. In addition, the linear birefringence (LB), circular birefringence (CB), linear diattenuation (LD), and circular diattenuation (CD), all properties are uniquely decoupled within the analytical model. The feasibility of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by measuring the local effective LB, CB, LD, and CD properties in tested samples such as a quarter-wave plate, a half-wave plate, a polarizer, a polarization controller. As authors’ knowledge, this methodology could be the most comprehensive algorithm in extracting all parameters (six parameters) in anisotropic optical materials. Thus, this new algorithm supplies a strong impact in accurately characterizing hybrid properties in anisotropic optical materials without any purification process in sample.
