Abstract

There are many pharmacological treatment options for classical trigeminal neuralgia. When those fail or are not tolerated, more invasive interventions are available. Other cranial neuralgias include occipital, glossopharyngeal, nasociliary, nervus intermedius, and supraorbital neuralgias and may be more challenging to diagnose and treat. Other causes of facial or oral discomfort include symptomatic (or secondary) trigeminal neuralgia, temporomandibular dysfunction, burning mouth syndrome, neck-tongue syndrome, and nummular headache. Pharmacotherapeutics are discussed from both a medicine and surgical standpoint with consideration of the limited evidence base.
