Abstract
The objective of this chapter is to introduce the implementation of a graduate education program integrated with research which can be identified as Transdisciplinary Healthcare Engineering. Before the introduction of the proposed program, we will review healthcare engineering as proposed by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and Institute of Medicine (IOM). This review will provide the basis and rationale for the proposed transdisciplinary healthcare engineering program introduced in the second section of the paper. Our transdisciplinary approach to advancing healthcare engineering is to create a new integrated graduate educational and research paradigm in which students are trained to conduct research seamlessly across disciplinary boundaries. This new graduate program will be designed to draw students from all disciplines and geography leveraging distance education technology in order to provide general education and training on how to apply their current and new knowledge towards a common goal in healthcare engineering. The outcomes of this healthcare engineering education will produce awareness of healthcare engineering issues, applications, and job opportunities in a collaborative transdisciplinary environment based on the guiding expertise of faculty from Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Business, Law, and Education.
