Internationalizing the Psychology Curriculum in the United States

Abstract

There have been questions as to the relevance and validity of the counseling psychology curriculum of North American and Northern European universities. Though slowing developing, counseling psychology is emerging as a subfield that is influencing the direction of international psychology. Though counseling psychology is legally recognized in only a few countries, other countries recognize counseling and hold similar values to those of counseling psychology. Approaches to internationalizing counseling psychology are presented, and highlight the idea that they should occur simultaneously on multiple levels. An evaluation of the internationalization of the field is conducted and presented through a SWOT approach. It is recommended that training programs evaluate their curriculum using a SWOT approach to provide useful information for discussions surrounding international perspectives of counseling psychology.
