Progress with Cold Powder-Metallurgy-Processed Superconducting Multifilamentary Composites

Abstract

Recent progress on the production of discontinuous multifilamentary composite superconductors by means of cold powder-metallurgical (P/M) processing is reviewed. These materials have superconducting and mechanical properties comparable to the best in situ superconducting materials. The Cu-Nb-Sn system was used as a prototype for comparison with other processes. Although other compounds have been explored, in this paper the discussion is restricted to results with Cu-Nb-Sn. The results of these cold PJM-processed materials encourage further development of the process for high-performance superconductors.
