Abstract
Two broad dimensions of childhood psychopathology have been identified: internalizing and externalizing disorders (Achenbach, 1982; Quay, 1979). Internalizing problems include anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal, whereas externalizing difficulties include conduct problems and hyperactivity. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd ed. rev. (DSM-III-R: American Psychiatric Association, 1987) presents several diagnostic categories corresponding to the internalizing dimension that can be applied to children. Primary among these are Separation Anxiety Disorder, Overanxious Disorder, Avoidant Disorder, Major Depression, and Dysthymic Disorder. Although a large body of research exists on externalizing disorders, children with internalizing disorders have been studied only recently.
