Abstract

The mental health professional typically assists children in crisis situations, after an identified problem has arisen. The increasingly short supply of mental health workers leaves many of the service demands of children and their families unmet, however, and this method is no longer sufficient. An alternative model for service delivery is one o£ prevention. This strategy attempts to build mental health rather than repair dysfunctions. Just as the medical profession has shown that prevention plays a significant role in bringing epidemic diseases, such as diphtheria and smallpox, under control by early vaccination, so, too, can mental health problems be ameliorated by early intervention programs.
