Abstract
Pneumonia has been studied intensively as to its etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, therapy, prognosis, and complications. It may be suprising therefore to discover the fragmentary knowledge available regarding its pathophysiology. Although great strides have been made, they have primarily focused on findings in the acute lung injury syndrome. The discussion in this chapter is limited to the classic parenchymal lesions of lobar and bronchopneumonia.
