Abstract

Many functions of living organisms are regulatory processes—a certain state, characterized by a measurable quantity, is kept constant. Examples are the regulation of body temperature, of blood pressure, and of the position of the body in the gravitational field. In many cases of regulation, the nervous system plays a central role.
