From Cognitive to Procedural Mapping

Basic Processes in Memory Development

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Cognitive Development ((2116))

Abstract

Cognitive maps are typically defined as internal representations of spatial information that permit individuals to maintain orientation or find their way in large-scale spaces (Acredolo, 1981; Downs & Stea, 1973; Siegel, Kirasic, & Kail, 1978). Rather than attempt to review the literature on cognitive mapping, we will take a broad and integrative approach in examining literature as it is relevant to the development of cognitive mapping. By development, we mean change in the direction of differentiation and hierarchical integration in any organized system over various spans of timeā€”for example, microgenesis, ontogenesis, phylogenesis, and so forth (see Siegel, Bisanz, & Bisanz, 1983).
