Abstract

The practice of medicine and ecology is much the same. It seems that the need for the medical general practitioner increases rapidly while the supply diminishes. It is a symptom of our evolving and expanding culture as discussed in Chapter 2 of this book, where we considered the apparent ecologic trends seen developing within our technologic growth. The skills and information that physicians must comprehend logically pressures those professionals into pursuing specialties instead of the general practice of medicine. There is too much to learn for any one person to become expert and self-sufficient in the whole field, so instead of becoming a generalist, many physicians in our “advanced” societies seek the confidence provided through being expert in a small sector of the whole field.
