Selenium in the environment

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology ((RECT,volume 62))

Abstract

Selenium (Se) was discovered by Berzelius in 1817 in the residual slime from the preparation of sulfur dioxide from copper pyrites. For more than a century the element remained mainly the object of classical chemical studies and experimentation. Because of special properties the element found commercial application in the glass industry in manufacture of ruby glass and also in neutralizing the green color of glass, due to the presence of ferrous silicate. Another early use of Se was in photocells and photodetectors.
